“I’m particularly interested in the relationship between historic and new architecture. Designing in this realm is an opportunity for a meaningful conversation between generations, literally building on the values and aspirations of those that have come before us — a collaboration across time.”

As an architectural omnivore, David has pursued a diverse set of design challenges for a range of public and private clients in his career — urban infill, adaptive reuse, historic preservation, interiors, transit, and high-performance buildings. A common thread connecting these projects is the preservation of natural and cultural resources coupled with the pursuit of transformative ideas. For almost a decade, David served on both the City of Portland Design Commission and the Portland Art Advisory Committee, reviewing hundreds of architecture, art, and planning proposals. His efforts have helped shape Portland’s vibrant urban environment defined by coherent design, active ground-floor uses, engaging public art, quality and permanence, and a priority for the pedestrian. David is a member of several professional organizations for library design and planning and historic preservation.
